Introducing the Raspberry Pi Computer

What is Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi is a credit card-sized mini-computer, which is available in many different sizes and configurations. The Raspberry Pi includes an SD card slot for storage and USB ports to connect a mouse and keyboard to be used with a screen via an HDMI connection. The Pi operates using a flavor of the Linux Operating system called Raspbian, installed on an SD card. A key feature of the Raspberry Pi is that once it’s setup it can run without external peripherals so you can disconnect mouse, keyboard, and even Screen too. Along with peripherals, It has GPIO pins (User available connections to the Pi for serial, general connections, etc) to which you can attach sensors or LED or other electronics hardware.

How is the Raspberry Pi helpful to the future of IoT?

Imagine you have the power of a computer in a size which fits the palm of your hand. The newer Raspberry Pi models now include Bluetooth and WIFI on board which makes it easier for the system to be integrated into the Internet of Things inspired projects. Since you have access to the systems GPIO pin outs, a large array of sensors or actuators may be added to allow the system to interact with the real world. The information that it collects can be analyzed locally or sent to the Cloud to be processed by large Big Data super computers. The Raspberry Pi is one of the best options which integrate the easy of use found with the Arduino micro-controller and the super easy interaction which we are accustomed with found in our smart phones or computers.
